Context
BubbliPop is a mobile arcade game built at IZANAGI CODE, the independent product studio I co-founded. It is designed around a single satisfying interaction, made for instant play.
The goal was to build a product that feels immediately understandable while holding attention over time. As co-founder and CPO, I led the product vision, gameplay design, and go-to-market.
The game is out: it is live on the App Store and Google Play.
The problem
Designing a game that is both simple to understand from the first interaction and engaging over time is a harder design problem than it looks. The core challenges were building a strong gameplay loop, sustaining player engagement, and balancing simplicity with enough depth to keep players coming back.
Discovery
Methods
- Early playtesting sessions to observe first-interaction comprehension
- Iteration on feedback systems: sound, animation, and haptic responses
- Analysis of engagement patterns across prototype versions
- Difficulty curve testing to identify drop-off and frustration points
What I found
The core loop was understood quickly by playtesters, but early versions lacked the feedback richness needed to sustain engagement. Players were not stopping because the game was too hard, they were stopping because interactions did not feel satisfying enough. Feedback quality and rhythm were the missing ingredients, not complexity.
Key insights
First interactions define retention
Players decide within seconds whether a game is worth their time. The first loop must feel immediately satisfying, before any instruction or onboarding.
Feedback is the reward
In simple games, the quality of the interaction response, sound, animation, feel, is the gameplay experience. Getting that right matters more than adding features.
Simplicity is a design challenge
Making something feel simple while maintaining depth requires more iteration, not less. Every element that stays must earn its place.
Strategy
Focus on a clear and intuitive core loop, design strong feedback and interaction systems, optimize for engagement and replayability, and iterate based on player behavior and product insights.
Product decisions
- 01Define and lock the core gameplay loop before adding any secondary mechanics
- 02Invest in feedback quality: every interaction must feel precise and satisfying
- 03Iterate on difficulty progression based on observed player behavior
- 04Prioritize replayability over breadth, depth of the core experience first
- 05Keep the interface minimal so gameplay feedback can breathe
Execution
Led product and design end-to-end, from gameplay concept through UI design, feedback systems, animations, and iterative playtesting across prototype versions.
What shipped
- 01Defined the core gameplay mechanics and interaction loop
- 02Designed user flows and interaction patterns for intuitive first play
- 03Built UI and feedback systems with attention to sound, animation, and feel
- 04Refined animations and overall game feel through repeated iteration
- 05Iterated on difficulty curve and progression based on real player behavior

Impact
BubbliPop shipped and is live on both mobile stores. The core loop was validated through repeated playtesting before release, and interaction clarity and responsiveness improved substantially across iterations, leaving a foundation ready for further modes and progression.
Key takeaway
Engagement comes from feedback, clarity, and rhythm. Not from complexity. Shipping is what tells you whether you got them right.
